What this set can run
Hisense 55U7SF runs Fire OS, which is Android underneath: APK applications install normally, but Amazon's home screen is the shell you see first.
This page describes Fire OS in general, not the firmware of one generation. Stick and television builds differ in menus, and the text names both where they do.
How to install it
Fire OS needs one setting changed before an APK can install. The full walkthrough is the Fire TV install guide linked from the model section; the short version:
- Settings → My Fire TV → About, then click the device name seven times. Developer Options appears in the same menu.
- Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install unknown apps, and turn it on for Downloader.
- Install Downloader from the Amazon Appstore, open it, and paste the APK address from the download page.
- The app lands under Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications. Open it once from there, then press Home.
Problems and error messages
A sideloaded app not appearing on the home row is expected behaviour, not a failed install: Fire OS lists it under Manage Installed Applications instead.
"App not installed" on an older stick usually means the Fire OS build is below the launcher's minimum Android version. The version is under Settings → My Fire TV → About.
Amazon occasionally removes or blocks a sideloaded app after a system update. Reinstalling the same APK restores it; there is nothing to repair on the file itself.
If Downloader cannot reach the address, it was mistyped or the network blocks it. Opening the same address in Silk is the quickest way to tell which.
Using the remote
Home, Back, Menu (the three-line key) and the assistant button. On most builds Menu opens the in-app options; Back dismisses a dialog that is waiting for an answer.
The assistant button is bound to Amazon's voice service and is not remapped by the launcher. The ring moves focus and the centre button selects, the same as on any Android TV remote.
