Sideloading on Fire TV: what works and what does not

Fire TV devices can sideload APKs through Downloader, and that part works exactly as on Android TV. The difference is the launcher: Amazon's home screen does not let you swap in a third-party launcher without workarounds, and recent Fire OS versions have closed the easy paths.

Apps that declare a leanback launcher activity will appear in the Fire TV app row. Apps that do not will be reachable only through Settings → Manage Installed Applications.

CleanYourTV runs on Fire TV as an ordinary app. Making it the Home app is not supported on current Fire OS, and we do not recommend attempting launcher replacement on those devices.

  1. Install Downloader from the Amazon app store.
  2. Enable Apps from Unknown Sources for Downloader in Fire TV settings.
  3. Enter the APK URL and install.
  4. Find the app in Settings → Manage Installed Applications if it has no TV icon.

Can I replace the Fire TV launcher with CleanYourTV?

Not on current Fire OS. Amazon locks the home screen to its own launcher. CleanYourTV installs and runs, but cannot become the Home app there.
