VLC for Android TV is the least fussy player you can put on a television. It opens local files, SMB and DLNA shares, and network streams without codec packs.

It is a good first app to install on a new box, because it proves the device can decode your files before you invest in a full media server.

  1. Install VLC for Android TV from Google Play.
  2. Grant storage permission on first launch.
  3. Browse to your SMB or DLNA share from the Network tab.
  4. Pin it in CleanYourTV if you use it daily.
