Android TV remote not working: 7 fixes that actually help

Most remote problems are pairing problems, not hardware failures. Android TV remotes use Bluetooth for voice and IR for power; if Bluetooth pairing is lost the TV still turns on but nothing else responds.
Work through the list in order. Each step is cheap and most people solve it by step three.

- Replace or reseat the batteries. Weak cells cause erratic pairing more often than a dead remote.
- Hold Back + Home for 5–10 seconds to enter pairing mode, then pair from Settings → Remotes & accessories.
- Check line of sight if only the power button works: power is IR and needs a clear path to the TV.
- Move USB 3.0 drives away from the TV. Their cables radiate 2.4 GHz noise that breaks Bluetooth pairing.
- Unplug the TV for 30 seconds. A crashed Bluetooth stack survives sleep but not a cold boot.
- Use the Google TV app on your phone as a temporary remote to finish setting up.
- If a specific app ignores the remote, check its manifest — some apps swallow D-pad events.

Why does my remote only turn the TV on and off?
Power uses IR while the rest uses Bluetooth. If only power works, the Bluetooth pairing is gone — re-pair it from Settings.
Can I use my phone instead?
Yes. The Google TV app connects over Wi-Fi and works as a full remote, including voice search.
